About Our Staff

Steve and Mel Hicks

Steve and Mel have been married for 39 years and started BSC over 21 years ago in 1997! They met when serving in the United States Navy during a tour in Adak, Alaska. Steve was then, a Radioman and Mel, an Ocean Systems Technician. Steve later went on to become a recruiter and Mel a mom of two boys. Steve retired in 1999 but came to repair machines from the beginning on weekends. Together they are dedicated to creating a fun and inspiring place for sewing enthusiasts to enjoy the art of creating in the sewing and quilting world.

Steve loves to play golf and Mel loves to sew, sew, sew!

They love to travel when they can and love their dogs and store mascots, Louie and Sadie!

Cheryl Walker

BERNINA Sewing Centre welcomed Cheryl to the team in 2001.

At a young age, her grandmother and mother inspired her to sew. She won awards as a youth creating her own clothing.

Making purses, embroidery, embroidery software, Silhouette, and most anything to do with sewing makes her happy! She loves the challenge of creating something new and she is ready to pass it on. Her style of teaching is calm and easy going, and students taking her classes are always pleased they have taken them. She especially enjoys sharing her knowledge and love of BERNINA machines with new machine owners!

Alice Middleton

Alice is a true Floridian…Born and raised in Central Florida. She graduated from FSU with a bachelor in elementary education and later received her Masters at UCF.

After 36 years of teaching, Alice retired and now spends two days a week at BSC playing with fabric and everything sewing! She and her husband have two grown children and currently live with 5 felines!

Jane Allingham

Jane is a quilter who loves to help fellow quilters plan and execute their projects. Moving to Lake Mary in 2014, she quickly found a home at BER-NINA Sewing Centre. Her prior work in a quilt shop in Great Falls, Virginia was a great springboard into the more contemporary quilts she enjoys making today. Jane also enjoys needlework and quilting by hand for a change of pace. She and her husband are native Kansans (with a long stint in Oklahoma) and have two adult sons, whom neither of share Janes lefthandedness.

Gretchen Krasoski

Born in the “good old days,” I grew up with wonderful parents and two great sisters. I graduated from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania with my Bachelor’s Degree and the University of Pittsburgh with my Master’s in Education. Following were marriage, the adoption of two awesome children, and 45 years of teaching in PA, NY, RI, MD, and FL.

I began sewing early in life with my mother and actually made many of my own clothes after I graduated from college. I met Mel and Steve in 2000 shortly after moving to Florida, and Mel has been my inspiration ever since. Now that I am retired, I have a wonderful life- I sew all morning, play with my grandson all afternoon, and work at Bernina Sewing Centre on Sundays. You can check out some of my projects at KrasoskisKrafts on Etsy, Facebook, or Pinterest.

Hannah Brooks

Not only does Hannah love to sew, she also loves to work on cars... Great with color and design layout, she is an excellent source for ideas for your next project! Organization is her most valuable asset at BSC!

Lynnette Woide

I inherited my creativity from my grandmother. One of my fondest memories is sitting under the quilt frame as my grandmother and her friends quilted quilts. At age 10, I started sewing made most of my own clothes growing up. The quilting bug hit me back in the 70's and I have been quilting ever since.

I have one son who lives in Colorado, and live with 2 cats and an adorable black lab. When not quilting I'm off riding my horse. I retired about 1 year ago from nursing.

Louie and Sadie

Louie has been with the BSC family since September 2016 and Sadie joined us November 2017. They love being our official greeters! They are especially good at being energetic, eating treats and chasing balls. They will do just about anything for fruit or a cheese treat!

When coming to BSC, they will be happy to let you give them a belly rub, those are their favorite!
